Anomalous artefacts
2012 and 2023
Found ceramic shards and epoxy
Inspired by the way archaeologists reconstruct historical artefacts using fragments, Julie & Jesse created new hybrid creatures with broken ceramic pieces collected from Jingdezhen and Hong Kong. During their time in Jingdezhen in 2012, the duo unearthed pieces of small animal sculptures from the grounds of an old state factory. The initial creation of these creatures was a contemplation on what could happen if the goal was not to reconstruct the whole piece with historical accuracy, but rather to let their imagination run wild. Julie & Jesse resumed the project in Hong Kong after finding shards of ceramic dining ware washed up on the shores of Lei Yue Mun.
Although the horse fragments and dining ware shards may not share many visual similarities, both touch upon the theme of domestication, as humans took a long time to tame horses and master the use of clay. By merging these discarded pieces into an unlikely amalgamation, Julie & Jesse breathe new life into the unwanted. The result is a dialogue on form that transcends time and geography.
