Description
Jolley’s sculptures of this period are softer and more fluid, the colours warmer and more intense than before. These works reveal maturity, understanding, and an acceptance of matter and the human existence, subjects previously tackled with greater impetuousness and harshness.
Jewel-toned figures of glass men and women, seemingly lit from within, strike different poses and expressions. They are outgoing and engaging, amusing and charming; some are contemplative, but not self-absorbed.
Jolley’s world is one of exaggerated contrasts: expression tempered with reserve, bright colours balanced with flat black, the hard shininess of glass transformed into a soft, almost velvety translucence.
